Workmans Lane, Warsash

Sunday 11 May

An early walk down Workmans Lane at the eastern end of the village continuing on down to the Solent then along the shore back to Chilling Head before heading back up to Workmans Lane to take the path round the horse field to Hook Lane and back to the car.  A lovely two mile walk in brilliant, warm sunshine with a light wind and a nearby Roe Deer at the start of the walk.

Roe Deer Capreolus capreolus

Carrion Crow, Blackbird, Chiffchaff and Wren as soon as I started down the lane and then no sooner finding the first of eleven Magpies in the field to my right than the first Greenfinch and in the horse field on the left a first Wheatear of the year. At the end of the lane before taking the path on down to the shore both Woodpigeon and Robin along with a pair of Dunnock. Continuing on down the stoney path a Robin and once at the shore in time to see a couple of Cormorants flying down the Solent with a half-dozen Herring Gulls in close proximity.

At the turn inland a Whitethroat atop a bramble bush and approaching the top of the connecting path a couple of Stock Doves at the top of the tree holding the nest box taken over from previous Little owl occupants.

Distant Raven Corvus corax guarding its nearby nest

Once in the horse field very many Carrion Crows and then, at the top, a sight of the distant Raven guarding its nest in the electricity pylon. Turning the corner I came across the male Egyptian Goose on a fence and below the hen with at lest seven goslings.

t the far end of the path a handful of Jackdaws and as I approached the nearest point to the pond the sight of two distant Mistle Thrushes on the grass behind the fence. And so on to Hook Lane and a walk through the trees and meadow back to the car with the sighting of more Magpies and Blackbirds.
